What is counselling?

Most people experience emotional difficulties at some time in their lives. Often these can be resolved without the need to seek help. For some these difficulties may persist, or may mean that the person’s usual methods of coping with adversity no longer seem to work. It is in situations such as these that counselling may be able to help.

I work with individual clients with a range of difficulties, including:

  • Depression
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Identity issues
  • Loss, bereavement and grief
  • Low self-esteem
  • Midlife concerns and other life changes
  • Relationship difficulties

Speaking about feelings and thoughts with another person present is a different experience to mulling things over to ourselves or to a close friend. It is provides a particular kind of conversation that is different from others, because the counsellor is not a part of your day-to-day social life.

Counselling therefore provides the opportunity to discuss difficulties in a confidential setting with someone who is trained to listen and to think with you about your difficulties. Counselling is a collaborative process with both the counsellor and the client working towards understanding what may be operating at a deeper level that is influencing behaviour, reactions and feelings.
